If you’ve seen the before-and-after photos of Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage lately, you may have wondered: is that really lymphatic massage?

It is, but it’s a different experience from traditional Manual Lymphatic Drainage. I offer both at The Art of Healing Touch, and the question I hear most is, “Which one should I book?” Let me help you answer it.

What Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage Is

Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage pairs lymphatic-focused movements with firmer, faster, more rhythmic techniques. The goal is to encourage fluid movement and leave you looking and feeling less puffy.

My clients book it when they feel bloated, after travel, before a wedding or vacation, or simply because they love how light they feel afterward. And yes, for that sculpted look that made it famous on social media.

What It Isn’t

It isn’t weight loss. Lymphatic massage doesn’t melt fat or permanently reshape your body. When clients leave looking more defined through the waist or abdomen, that’s a temporary reduction in puffiness, and results vary from person to person.

I actually think knowing this makes the treatment more enjoyable. No unrealistic promises, just the chance to leave feeling lighter, relaxed, and comfortable in your body.

Brazilian vs. Traditional MLD

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is soft, slow, and deeply relaxing. It’s used clinically for lymphedema, post-surgical swelling, scar tissue, and fibrosis, but many people also choose it for wellness because they love its gentleness.

Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage is more energizing and is chosen for debloating, temporary contouring, and pre-event preparation. I think of them as different tools, not competing treatments.

A Word About Surgery

This is the part I most want you to hear. Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage may be contraindicated during post-surgical recovery.

After procedures like a tummy tuck or breast reconstruction, your tissue isn’t intact yet. It’s still healing, and firmer, faster pressure can work against that process. I have personally seen clients experience major setbacks in their healing after unknowingly choosing Brazilian drainage too soon after surgery.

If you’re recovering from a procedure, clinical Manual Lymphatic Drainage is the appropriate choice, and your surgeon should be part of that decision. Please tell me about any recent surgery before we book.

What It Feels Like

Brazilian drainage uses more pressure than clinical MLD, but it should still feel comfortable. You should never have to grit your teeth through it. More pressure doesn’t mean better lymphatic work, and I always want to work with your body rather than against it.

Before Your Session

Come hydrated, skip the heavy meal beforehand, and wear something comfortable. Afterward, gentle movement and water are all you need. No “detox” and no punishing prep required.

So, Which Should You Choose?

If you want to feel less puffy, look a little more defined for an event, or just enjoy an energizing treatment, Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage may be perfect for you. If you’re managing lymphedema, chronic swelling, a medical condition, or post-surgical recovery, clinical MLD is the better fit. Not sure? That’s what I’m here for. With more than 25 years of hands-on experience as a Certified Lymphatic Therapist, I’ll help you choose what truly supports your body.

Sometimes you need clinical care. Sometimes you just want to feel fabulous in that dress. There’s room for both.
